Another World
Tianlin Liu
We were foolish in our youth
To run wild upon mountains
Tasting the sweet dew from morning leaves
Promising we’d build a world
Where nothing be too small to stay
A gentle one
Where yesterday’s stains soften
Like the newborn rivers
That run down mountainsides in early spring
Where broken dreams yet soar
Weightless like butterflies
Across the jagged hills
And day upon day it’d be the same
I’d walk down to the lake so we can meet
And you would follow faithfully behind me
Tracing every step
Until I could find your eyes peering out the water
As they gazed back at my own on the mirrored surface
I’d stay a bit longer each time
And you would too
The two of us reaching closer for warmth every moment
Until we finally pull apart
Startled by the sting of the water that separates us
Remembering when our hearts turned cold
The saplings we seeded together
Now crushed by April frost
Even the sun has learned to cry
Yet I still lay each day on those shriveled roots
Remembering how we promised
To watch them grow up and grow old
The white peaks yet call our empty names
Screaming the cries of that distant world
Beyond reach of the cracked skin over my icy fingertips
The words catching on every fold
Pulling us like baited fish towards the angler that waits
Until the syllables warmed under the winter sun
And rose into mist that carried our minds far away
And in this mist I saw you stand
I took your hand in mine as we ran
To our world, our forever home
The abyss will embrace us in its arms
A voice calling us home
Where there, under the miles of earth
Peace will finally dawn upon us
Tears will flow no more from stinging eyes
And sound will never again reach our troubled ears
For in this eternal dark night
Seek not for me
As I am already long asleep
Waiting for when the frozen earth will become our home
Where we will lie, like shadows, in this forgotten century
Never to wake up
From this everlasting dream
